M3GAN

While the idea of artificial intelligence gone wrong and anthropomorphic dolls coming to life and killing people has been done to death, M3GAN still manages to have both while keeping it fresh. It sees Allison Williams as Gemma, a roboticist trying to come up with a life-like robot toy for the toy company she works for. After Gemma's sister and her husband die in a car accident, she has trouble taking care of her niece, Cady, due to her demanding job and not being emotionally open with her. In her attempt to get close to Cady, Gemma comes up with M3GAN, a robot made to look like a little girl and with artificial intelligence that is capable of helping Cady deal with her trauma while protecting her from danger. While initially successful as Cady becomes attached to M3GAN and Gemma's boss orders more of them, the robot's closeness to Cady starts to go wrong and a rampage of death and chaos ensue. The story for this movie, came up by James Wan and Akela Cooper who wrote the script, manages to take overused ideas and tropes and spins it into a well executed horror that also has good use of drama and deals with the psychological effects of a young girl who just lost her parents. Williams and Violet McGraw, who plays Cady, not only give powerful performances but have such an incredibly strong chemistry that you believe that they're niece and aunt. The rest of the cast is good too, but especially the two people who portray M3GAN, Amie Donald portraying her physically and Jenna Davis doing the voice. 2023 is off to a good start thanks to M3GAN being such a hit right into the first week of the year, something that doesn't always happen. Star Wars: Dark Empire #1

From 1991 until 2014, around the time Disney bought the franchise, the comic book stories based around Star Wars were done by Dark Horse Comics. Star Wars: Dark Empire #1 is the first issue of the very first storyline that Dark Horse ever did, itself following up from both Return of the Jedi and the novel Heir to the Empire the same year. This debut issue sees Leia, Han, and Chewbacca aiding Luke as he and other Rebels are flanked by Imperial forces while in Coruscant. While the Rebels manage to win the battle at first, an unknown entity appears through a wormhole, and while Han and the others escape via the Falcon, Luke stays behind as he feels a strong presence in the Force and believes it's after him. Luke is taken by this unknown entity as Han promises Leia that they will rescue him and reunite with the Rebel leaders. The story for this comic is well written by Tom Veitch, capturing the characters from the Original Trilogy perfectly and starting out with a great mystery that elicits the need to read the rest of the story. Both the dialogue and narration are kept very minimum, never having too much of either and giving us just the right amount of exposition, which part of the credit must be given to letterer Todd Klein. Working on all of the aspects of the comic's artwork, Cam Kennedy certainly has a unique look and excels at detailed characters and backgrounds and shadows. The coloring is a bit mixed since there's just a bit too much use of purple and pink, but it does also give a sense of its own identity and certain parts due enhance the awe and mysteriousness. Star Wars: Dark Empire #1 has the task of starting a new story with already established and loved characters under a company that's only five years old, which it manages to pull off perfectly. Avatar: The Way of Water

Waiting over a decade for a sequel to a movie can be a daunting task, but when that film is the highest grossing film of all time and told numerous times it will release a certain year only for numerous delays to constantly shift its release date, you'd think all that time would lose interest. Avatar: The Way of Water is proof why patience and time are good indicators of a movie succeeding and that the original's success wasn't just a fluke. James Cameron's long awaited followup to his 2009 hit sees Jake Sully become the leader of the Na'vi clan he became a part of and having kids with Neytiri, also adopting a human kid, Spider, left behind by the RDA and son of Colonel Quaritch and a Na'vi girl, Kiri born from Grace Augustine's inert Avatar. When the RDA return, Jake uses his military skills to help hide his people and fight back against the new human colonists. Seeing Jake and the Na'vi as a legitimate threat, the RDA sends out a squad of their own Na'vi avatars, led by one with the memories of Quaritch. Wanting revenge against Jake for his betrayal and murder, Quaritch kidnaps Spider and threatens to destroy everything Jake cares about. Not wanting to put the tribe in more danger, Jake and his family head out to find shelter with a water based Na'vi tribe far from the forest. Jake's family learns to adapt to the new ways though Kiri is a quick learner thanks to her mysterious connection to Pandora's consciousness. Quaritch, meanwhile uses Spider to find Jake as he tries to go through the same trials and tests that Sully did in the first film. It all culminates with Quaritch's group drawing the family out with the help of an RDA marine operation and thus Jake must face the colonel to keep his family safe. If there's one thing to never do is doubt James Cameron, as his long lasting career with barely any misses can attest to that. Yes, his writing, alongside two others, isn't entirely new and filled with many cliches, but it's really good and Cameron knows how to keep these repeated tropes fresh. His characters, for the most part, are relatable, three dimensional, and don't just feel like typical alien stereotypes. The world building as we get to explore other parts of Pandora is incredible to behold and to show that there's more to this exomoon than what the 2009 original offered. The biggest flaw with his writing, however, is that due to being over three hours, his ambitious world building often distracts from much of the story and feels a bit padded. Another is the third act, wherein Jake and his family escape out of only then go back to the RDA whaling vessel more than once, that becomes really repetitive and suddenly turns into Cameron wanting to relieve Titanic when the vessel sinks almost exactly. Between the cast that comes back and the ones new to the series, every single actor gives strong performances, with great credit towards all the Na'vi motion capture actors. Sam Worthington is as good, if not better, Zoe SaldaƱa never misses a beat, Stephen Lang is once again a fun and engaging villain, Sigourney Weaver is believable playing a girl in her teens, and Kate Winslet is so good that you don't realize who she plays on first viewing. One sad note is that James Horner, the first movie's composer, died in 2015 and thus what new music he would have done is greatly missed, but Simon Franglen does a good job at recapturing Horner's work while giving his own perfect work. The biggest praise that these two films will always have is the impressive visual effects put forth to capture Cameron's vision, especially since what he wanted wasn't available for years after the first movie came out. Between the attention to detail in the water tribe's village, how realistic the water looks and moves, and Russell Carpenter's breathtaking cinematography you get visual effects that are not just outstanding but hard to top. Delays often hurt a film once it comes out, whether due to waning interest or word of mouth about troubled production, but with Avatar: The Way of Water needing to wait for the right technology, and a bit from Covid, that wait was certainly worth it. The Menu

The Menu proves that the world of culinary arts can be both so enticingly delicious and morbidly terrifying at the same time. Director Mark Mylod crafts an incredible horror comedy that focuses more on the slow build up than anything too graphic. Writers Seth Reiss and Will Tracy manage to make such an enticing script with fun wit, great critique towards the elite and wealthy, and well paced horror alongside memorable characters. Peter Deming's cinematography is good, nothing entirely new or unique, but his use of lighting does help enhance the horror when needed. The production design not only gives us minimal, but incredible, sets but the architecture lends itself well to the genre and the food presented is just as incredible. Finally, the cast are all phenomenal, with Anya Taylor-Joy always a knockout, Ralph Fiennes giving a good mix of warmth and terror, and everyone else just as incredible. Horror is a genre with no boundaries, whether you set it in a summer camp, a hospital, or with The Menu in a rich restaurant. Over all: 100%

Action Comics Vol. 1 #674

Serving as a prologue to the Panic in the Sky! Superman focused storyline, Action Comics Vol. 1 #674 sets up quite a mystery before the event gets started. It sees two different Superman, one on Earth fighting Intergang and another in an alien planet who gets into a fight in a bar. The fight in the bar gets the attention of a warrior who has fought Superman before and thus wants a rematch, though this Superman doesn't remember him or much of his past. Their fight catches the attention of a new leader to Warworld, revealed to be Brainiac, they get captured and this Superman is revealed to be a shapeshifting creature that then takes on the form of Supergirl. Without any memory of who Supergirl is supposed to be and what Brainiac is, she sides with him in his plan to invade Earth and battle Superman. Being an issue that's mostly about setting up a larger storyline, this comic does a good job thanks to Roger Stern's writing. Even though it's obvious which Superman is the real one, Stern remains committed to the writing and keeps it fresh and the dialogue engaging. The artwork is good, though not entirely great as Bob Mcleod and Denis Rodier have really great designs, especially for the alien bar, while the coloring from Glenn Whitmore adds to the detail. But there are a few panels where the backgrounds are just empty white voids with no detail around the characters. If Action Comics Vol. 1 #674 is just a prologue, then this is a well made prologue that hooks you into the larger story at play. Over all: 98%
Top list so far for 3rd set of comics:
