Abigail

Vampires are nothing new in film, but it's not everyday that we get a little girl vampire who's also a ballerina in Abigail. The titular character, initially acting like an innocent child, gets kidnapped by a group of criminals who are unaware of what she is and only know that Abigail is the daughter of a powerful figure. Things start to go wrong when the house they're in locks them in, Abigail reveals herself as a vampire, and the bodies start dropping. This film is a complete riot thanks to the combination of strong writing, directing, acting, effects, production values, and cinematography. Stephen Shields and Guy Busick craft a fun and terrifying script that manages to take an overused premise and give it great spins, while also having very three dimensional characters with very witty and informative dialogue. Coming off of the last two Scream movies, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett continue to prove why their unique touch and style are perfect for the horror genre. As Abigail, Alisha Weir is fantastic and terrifying, proving to be such a formidable and fun actress despite being in her early teens. Alongside her you also get strong and believable performances from Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, and Kevin Durand. All of them manage to take the already great writing of their characters and install charm and likability to them. The minimal and small locations helps to give the effects, production values, and cinematography a sense of great detail despite its limited setting. A movie as fun, good, and absolutely bonkers and terrifying is not always easy to make, but Abigail manages to do that in spades. Over all: 100%

Fantastic Four Vol. 1 #48

Comics in the 1960s during the Silver Age of the medium didn't come much bigger than with Fantastic Four Vol. 1 #48. The comic sees the first family of Marvel dealing with the aftermath from a confrontation with the Inhumans only to be greeted and warned by the Watcher who warns them about the Silver Surfer and the coming of Galactus. Being the first part of the Galactus Trilogy, this issue does an absolutely fantastic job at setting up the stakes and the grave threat that the cosmic giant serves in the Marvel universe. Thanks to the combination of Stan Lee's writing with the art and coloring from Jack Kirby and Joe Sinnott, you get a highly memorable comic with good pacing and detailed, brisk art. It does, as typical for its time, tend to over-rely on large expository dialogue and characters often posing in very dramatic ways. But, that's part of the charm of 60s Silver Age comics, and the silly things like Galactus appearing green and red or the Watcher with a square head don't keep this classic issue from being so influential. Fantastic Four Vol. 1 #48 is a fun issue not just because it introduces iconic aspects to the Marvel mythos, but because of the people who worked on it giving it their best. Over all: 100%

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is a Guy Ritchie film starring Henry Cavill in which the latter portrays a real life British soldier in this slightly fictionalized account of him and his team performing covert operations against the Nazis. Essentially it's in the same vain as Inglourious Basterds of an absolute ride in seeing Nazis getting killed, but this time this actually happened, somewhat. That alone makes The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare an instant classic and here's hoping Ritchie and Cavill collaborate again. Over all: 100%

Monkey Man

Dev Patel marks his directorial debut with Monkey Man, which he also stars in and cowrites with Paul Angunawela and John Collee. In it, Patel portrays Kid, who wages a one man war against corrupt Indian government officials responsible for his mother's death. Kid's actions in turn inspire a community of transgender people, themselves targeted by the same officials, to aid him in his quest. The writing from the three is absolutely phenomenal, but it's Patel's work behind the camera that truly stands out. His style, especially this being his first, is incredible with how brutal and well choreographed the action scenes are. It helps that the camera remains steady while moving smoothly through the martial arts sequences, Sharone Meir's cinematography is equal parts grungy and vibrant, and the editing from Dávid Jancsó, Tim Murrell, and Joe Galdo keep the action and pace perfectly balanced. With just a budget of ten million dollars, Monkey Man makes so many hundred million dollar budgets seem pale in comparison. Over all: 100%

Blue Beetle Vol. 5 #1

In Blue Beetle Vol. 5 #1, Ted Kord, the second character to take on the mantle after Dan Garett's death, starts his first self-titled series from Charlton Comics by taking on a group of thieves who plan their heists near large bodies of water to escape in their own submarine. The comic has a smaller second story at the end that introduces The Question as he investigates and prevents a mob hit. Both stories are pretty fun and have very engaging stories, not surprising as both were written by the legendary Steve Ditko, though the first was cowritten with D.C. Glanzman. Ditko also provided the entirety of the artwork for the entire issue and no one can ever deny just how great the comic looks. The biggest credit to Ditko is how different and unique he handles the writing and art for the two stories, with the Blue Beetle being very fun and colorful much like the standard of superhero stories at the time, while Question's is darker and more serious to fit its noir detective style. Thanks to Steve Ditko, Blue Beetle Vol. 5 #1 isn't just another start to a new volume or introduction to a new character, but also a pretty fun and engaging comic. Over all: 100%

Late Night with the Devil

While I do condemn the use of artificial intelligence art, Late Night with the Devil is absolutely more than just that. This supernatural horror is told through found footage and documentary storytelling about a fictional talk show, specifically an episode on Halloween of 1977 and how its host invited a supposedly possessed girl to boost ratings. David Dastmalchian leads as Jack Delroy and absolute delivers, managing to capture the comedy of a late night host and the drama, tension, and fear of a man dealing with forces more powerful than him. With the direction, writing, and editing by Colin and Cameron Cairnes, this duo did an impressive job with their superb style, great use of tension, magnificent change in tone that starts out lighthearted and slowly but surely gets darker, and great editing evoking talk shows and the behind the scenes drama of the era. The Cairnes have certainly crafted a unique and incredible horror movie that knows when to build tension and when to deliver the scares. While Matthew Temple's cinematography also does a great job at capturing the style that talk shows had in the 70s. The rest of the cast, whether they play members of the show or guests, especially Ingrid Torelli, all give memorable, and at times terrifying, performances. As for the use of AI art, it is rather minimal and brief, being used just for animated commercial insertions. It never should have been done, but thankfully it doesn't take away from the production values, visual design, and aesthetics that do capture the area well. I'm willing to give Late Night with the Devil a pass for its brief AI art use, whether or not I enjoyed it or not, and hope that this serves as the line that no one will cross ever again. Over all: 99%

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

King Kong and Godzilla reunite, or rather initially try to kill each other before fighting alongside against a bigger threat, in the Monsterverse's latest installment, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. When Kong explores more of Hollow Earth he discovers a tribe of his own species ruled by Skar King, a tyrannical ape who plans to use his army and an ice breathing monster he tortures to take over the surface of Earth. Initially beaten by Skar, Kong must reluctantly get help from a newly upgraded Godzilla in order to defeat him. All the while, Monarch has discovered survivors from the ancient tribe that lived in Skull Island and with their mystical abilities and a new enhanced glove for Kong, they aid in the Titans' fight. This film is over the top, silly, and really loves to pay homage to the sillier aspects of the 1960s and '70s Godzilla entries. The writing from Terry Rossio, Simon Barrett, and Jeremy Slater is not afraid to dabble into the absolute craziness that giant monster movies can be. Although a lot of the human based story is not as memorable as the monster stuff, their writing does manage to connect them to the Titans better than some other entries in the franchise. Plus it introduces Trapper, a veterinarian for Titans perfectly and delightfully portrayed by Dan Stevens giving off a bit of Ace Ventura. Director Adam Wingard returns from Kong and Godzilla's previous team up and outdoes himself when it comes to the monster battles. Whereas he previously gave the franchise a dark and serious tone with very standard fights, with this entry Wingard gives it the big budget equivalent of what the late Shōwa era would have been like. Giving Godzilla an upgrade that makes him pink, a robotic gauntlet that enhances Kong's strength, Mothra being summoned to aid the title characters, and at one point having the Hollow Earth fight happen in zero gravity is just the perfect amount of nonsense. Alongside Stevens you also get good performances from Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and a standout from Kaylee Hottle. Sometimes it's okay for a movie to just be a fun silly spectacle, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is that at its best. Over all: 94%

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

The paranormal investigators who research the strange and bust ghosts are back with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Three years after the events of the previous entry, the Spenglers and Gary Grooberson have moved to Manhattan to become the new Ghostbusters, with some aid from the original crew. Both the new and old teams have to contend with a new threat in the form of a ghostly god with the power to cause another Ice Age. Gil Kenan takes over directing duties from Jason Reitman, though both return as writers after already writing Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Their biggest flaw with the writing is that they introduce too many new characters whose developments are often rushed by the end, such as Kumail Nanjiani's Nadeem and Melody, a ghost girl that Phoebe befriends. There's also Trevor's use of him throughout the movie wherein he's just trying to capture Slimer and not much else. But other than that, Kenan and Reitman continue to bring some great new and unique ideas to the franchise. They do bring back old characters and have some references to the original films, but mostly do it in a quick way without harping on it for too long. Story's got a good combination of dark twists and hilarious jokes add to that Ernie Hudson's Winston becomes a real standout compared to the other original characters. The cast all give strong performances who capture the mix of comedy, drama, and terror incredibly well, especially the chemistry between McKenna Grace and Emily Alyn Lind. Another person to return is cinematographer Eric Steelberg whose work continues to give this franchise a look that continues to improve. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is another fun entry in the franchise, and while it may not be as strong as Afterlife, it still carries the heart. Over all: 90%

Kung Fu Panda 4

With this being the fourth film in the franchise since 2008, Kung Fu Panda 4 sees Po taking on a shape shifting chameleon who wants to obtain the martial arts skills from the spirits of Po's defeated enemies to rule over China. All that as Po learns that he has to become a spiritual leader and thus pass on the Dragon Warrior mantle to someone else, and he believes that a young Fox thief is a good successor despite Master Shifu's reluctance. Even after four films, this franchise knows how to give audiences perfectly choreographed, animated, edited, and creative fight scenes. Jack Black as Po and Awkwafina as Zhen, the Fox thief, have such a strong and memorable chemistry that they are the heart of the movie. You also get Viola Davis as a very memorable villain and Ian McShane returns as Tai Lung managing to keep his threatening presence but also show how his time as a spirit have changed him. The writing is pretty good, but often focuses too much on comedic hijinks compared to the first three movies. Especially when the focus shifts towards Po's biological and adopted fathers wanting to help him as their antics does drag at times. There are also decisions made by the studio that do affect the overall film, such as demanding at most a 90 minute limit which makes the pacing a little off at times. Another decision was to not have the Furious Five appear until the end, though voiceless to keep the budget low. On one hand, they're Po's allies who's differing fighting styles makes for great fight scenes, but on the other it did allow for Po and Zhen to better develop and introduced some new interesting characters that would go and help him. It may not reach the heights of its predecessors, but Kung Fu Panda 4 is still a pretty fun movie on its own right. Over all: 89%

Showcase Vol. 1 #75

Showcase Vol. 1 #75 introduced the DC Comics pair of Hawk and Dove, siblings with different world views on how to handle serious situations. During a protest against the Vietnam War, brothers Hank and Don Hall hold different views over the war and the protestors, with Hank supporting aggression and taking action while Don believes in a peaceful and non violent alternative. When their father, a well regarded judge, becomes the target of an assassination attempt, the siblings involve themselves in figuring out who wants their father dead. Upon finding the hangout of the conspirators and realizing that they don't have a plan, Hank and Don are given powers and costumes from a mysterious force. As Hawk and Dove, they both try to stop the criminals and save their father while still keeping to their own beliefs with the former using aggression and the latter trying to be reasonable. For both an introduction and an origin story, this is a pretty good issue that manages to give us a lot of information about the new characters to keep us interested while giving us just enough of their development to make readers invested for their own series. Most of Steve Skeates's writing does a good job at showing the differences between the Hall siblings, though they're both a bit over the top in how extreme their beliefs are. The sudden moment of them getting their powers does feel very out of nowhere without any hints or foreshadowing towards it. But overall, the writing of the story is pretty good, the siblings are fun, and does make good points for both sides and ideals. For the art, it was all done by Marvel legend Steve Ditko, also a co-creator, and right from the first page you get such an incredible look. Characters are well detailed, colors are vibrant, backgrounds are great, and the sequential action is done really well. Hawk and Dove's debut in Showcase Vol. 1 #75 is not only a fun read but a pretty good time capsule of 1968. Over all: 100%

Dune: Part 2

Adapting the second half of Frank Herbert's legendary and influential novel, Dune: Part 2 follows on from the 2021 film wherein Paul Atreides and her mother have to survive in the harsh environment of the planet Dune after the Atreides family was betrayed by the Harkonnen's with approval from the Emperor of the universe. With the help from the planet's inhabitants, the Fremen, Paul must learn to hone his abilities of the Bene Gesserit he inherited from his mother, come to grips with the idea of being a messiah, and fight the many forces that the Harkonnens and Empire sets against them. This sequel not only manages to live up to being a sequel to the already strong first film, but manages to surpass it to be an astounding movie on its own right. Denis Villeneuve crafts an incredibly astounding work that no doubt captures what made the original 1965 novel such a powerful story. His direction is so precise in capturing incredible detail and the writing Denis shares with Jon Spaihts manages to take a story that has been copied by others inspired by Herbert's book but keeps it true to what the source material true, thus making it feel authentic and in some ways fresh. The characters never feel one dimensional and the motivations are not only understandable but, much like the original book, leaves you questioning who is in the right and how certain events aren't straightforward. Villeneuve's decision to shoot in actual deserts truly encapsulates how big budget movies can still have just as much practical effects and locations as digital effects. All the shots of the landscapes are incredible, all thanks to Greig Fraser's astounding work in the cinematography. While we had shots like that in the first movie, with this one it's set more in the desert and thus Fraser's work shines more. Add to that, scenes that take place in the Harkonnen home world are shot in this astounding black and white look thanks to infrared cameras. Hans Zimmer not only returns to work on the score, but he manages to outdo himself by creating one of the most etherial pieces of music ever. One particular track, "Kiss the Ring", plays throughout the movie at certain points, but especially at the end. It's both incredibly beautiful and astoundingly terrifying, being able to feel an awe in Paul's journey throughout the desert and then a touch of tragedy when Paul declares a war that may lead to thousands dying as he's manipulated by many forces. With Timothée Chalamet in the lead, he gives an incredibly powerful performance and makes Paul's development, struggles, and decisions seem life like. Alongside him, Chalamet's costars which include Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Florence Pugh, and Austin Butler all deliver just as powerful performances. As the story relies on the characters for its plot, the cast all did an incredible job with whom they played whether they had big or small roles. With a sequel already set based on Herbert's 1969 followup Dune Messiah, Villeneuve and everyone else involved in it will have a hard time in trying to surpass a movie like Dune Part 2. Drive-Away Dolls

Things get weird, fun, and trippy in Drive-Away Dolls, a crime comedy road film solely directed by Ethan Coen without any involvement from his brother. The film centers on two lesbian friends in 1999 who get tangled up in a criminal conspiracy after they were given the wrong rental car. Along the way the two must contend with corrupt politicians, secrets in briefcases, a decapitated head, and their forming love for each other. Despite only having one half of the Coens involved, Ethan's direction and the writing between him and his wife, Tricia Cooke, still has the signature dark humor and over the top violence we expect from them. It's highly creative with an engaging story and characters that can often come off as silly but still highly endearing. The biggest flaw is that at less than 90 minutes, you yearn for more and it often feels like everything is going too fast at times. But with the cast involved, such as Beanie Feldstein and Colman Domingo, but especially the two leads played by Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan, it's an unforgettable 84 minutes. While it may not hold up compared to other works done by the Coens, whether together or separately, Drive-Away Dolls is still a fun movie to get through. Over all: 90%

Lisa Frankenstein

A horror comedy set in the 80s, Lisa Frankenstein stars Kathryn Newton as an outcast who befriends and then falls in love with a reanimated corpse played by Cole Sprouse. Zelda Williams, in her feature-length directorial debut, crafts a fun and quirky film aided thanks to Diablo Cody's writing. Their work manages to take a rather simple and overplayed story and gives it a very unique identity with how the plot goes from start to finish. The movie knows how to perfectly balance terrifying and bloody moments with absolutely hilarious ones right after. Newton and Sprouse not only give strong performances but their chemistry is what truly cements this movie. Under lesser filmmakers and actors, Lisa Frankenstein would no doubt be a forgettable droll, but thankfully the strong work of its cast and crew make it worthwhile. Over all: 89%

Argylle

Matthew Vaughn's latest foray into the spy comedy genre is Argylle, in which a spy novelist gets involved in the real deal. Bryce Dallas Howard and Sam Rockwell lead in this, as usual for Vaughn, over the top and energetic romp. While a lot of Jason Fuchs's writing doesn't offer anything too new, the plot is rather predictable from the start, and so much relies on obvious coincidences, he still manages to make it entertaining despite that. Being a Vaughn film, the action and fight scenes are of course incredibly inventive, wonderfully unique, and high octane. However, due to its PG-13 rating there's so much of the action that feels rather tame compared to his previous work. Howard and Rockwell not only play well off of each other, but you also get Bryan Cranston and Catherine O'Hara as highly memorable villains as well as Henry Cavill and John Cena who often steal the movie as fictional spies from the books that take part in similar escapades as the leads. However, for such a big budget film, some of the effects do feel a bit jarring, even if it adds to the fun appeal at times. Despite being an incredibly fun movie, Argylle does tend to feel like it's both trying too much and not enough. Over all: 78%

Marvel Super-Heroes Vol. 1 #18

The original iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy was introduced in Marvel Super-Heroes Vol. 1 #18  back in 1968. Consisting of Jupiterian soldier Charlie-27, American astronaut Vance Astro, the crystalline Plutonian Martinex, and archer Yondu Udonta, the four strangers have to learn to work together to defeat the Badoon who plan to invade the Solar System in the 31st century. This introduction to the original version of the Guardians is interesting, with only a few things similar to the most well known incarnation made famous by the James Gunn films. A few things off note include having a member be from Earth but unable to go back, Yondu and his choice of weapon, how the team initially started fighting each other before finding common ground, and fighting against enemies wanting to conquer all. Arnold Drake's writing gives each of the characters the feeling of not just being stock sci-fi characters but giving them their own backstories and motivations. It often over relies on narration and exposition, but considering this is the start of a new franchise for Marvel, it's needed to let us understand this futuristic setting. With Gene Colan, Mike Esposito, and Stan Goldberg each providing the initial artwork, inking, and coloring to the comic, you have pages and panels with incredible visuals. Good use of shadows, vibrant backgrounds, and detailed character designs all add to the biggest strength of this issue. One small complaint is Charlie-27's design is overly rotund, though him being from a planet with much stronger gravity does explain it but could have been better. Marvel Super-Heroes Vol. 1 #18 is not only a fun comic to read, but a good start for what was considered one of Marvel's most obscure character. Over all: 100%

The Book of Clarence

Set during the time of Jesus Christ's rise in 33 A.D. Jerusalem, The Book of Clarence is a biblical comedy starring LaKeith Stanfield as a man who, due to owing large debts, sells himself off as a messiah to earn money. Jeymes Samuel's writing and direction gives this movie a very unique approach that mixes atypical biblical storytelling from the 50s with modern sensibilities and often trippy visuals. The sudden shift between the comedy of Clarence's antics and the stark drama of him being judged and crucified can be jarring, but it's a rather bold decision. Rob Hardy's cinematography, most of the score from Samuel himself, and the production values really capture the feel of the era perfectly. The performances from everyone involved are strong, but especially Stanfield who makes Clarence's change from cynical con man to absolute believer of Jesus seem believable. If there's one negative I do have to give is that while it's only about two hours there are times when it can feel a bit slow and sluggish. Regardless of its pace, The Book of Clarence is not only entertaining but does a better job at sending messages about belief than most other movies that center around similar subjects. Over all: 92%

Sabrina the Teenage Witch Vol. 1 #8

Archie Comics has been home to many other franchises besides its signature Riverdale teens, including Sonic and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but it's a comic like Sabrina the Teenage Witch Vol. 1 #8 that shows why the young witch is one of their strongest mascots. The issue is an anthology depicting Sabrina in some fun situations and adventures alongside her friends and family. Stories include turning Harvey, Sabrina's boyfriend, into a dog while at the beach, Aunt Hilda messing with Sabrina's friends after they mocked her, and Della telling a ghost story. Much of the writing for most of the comic is pretty simple, depicting atypical hijinks, but the ghost story at the end is definitely the best with good tension and a brilliant twist. The art is pretty typical for an Archie Comic title for most of it, but once again the ghost story absolutely shines compared to what came before. It's style is pretty much the same, but adds more shadow and lighting to certain panels as well as giving more details towards both the characters' faces and the backgrounds to really give you a dark horror story and the characters involved really show fear. Even without that final story, Sabrina the Teenage Witch Vol. 1 #8 is still a pretty delightful read nonetheless. Over all: 100%

Mean Girls 2024

Mean Girls 2024 is the feature film adaptation of the stage musical which was inspired by the original non musical from 2004, itself adapted by Tina Fey from a non comedic self-help book about high school cliques. Similarly to the stage musical and original movie, it centers on Cady Heron, a teenage girl who learns to go to high school in America after spending years of being home schooled in Kenya. As she tries to fit in, Cady learns about many of the school's cliques including the popular mean girl and leader of the rich Plastics, Regina George. With Fey returning to write, this version stays true to the story of the 2004 version but focusing much of the comedy on straight forward comedy rather than the original's over the top style. For the most part it works, but certain jokes that come back don't fit this movie's style and often feel like an unneeded leftover. The cast all provide not only strong performances but perform the musical performances well, though some of the early song performances do feel a bit stiff and too quick. Angourie Rice as Cady is certainly great, but Reneé Rapp absolutely steals the whole movie as Regina, which is helped by the fact that Rapp played the role on stage. While the musical numbers themselves are mostly well done, it's the music and songs that are great but often feel a bit lacking. Regina's introduction, Revenge Party, and the secrets of the Burn Book coming out are all incredible songs, but certain songs at the start and middle feel like they go to fast and lack a bit of the strength of the other ones. 2024 starts its release of movies with Mean Girls 2024 and for the most part is pretty good, but here's hoping there's improvement as the year goes. Detective Comics Vol. 1 #441

With only two entirely new stories at the start and end and having everything in the middle be reprints of older stories ranging from the 40s to the 60s, 1974s Detective Comics Vol. 1 #441 is certainly an interesting read. The first story sees Batman take on a criminal named the Judge who puts traps in an abandoned building that the Dark Knight has to go through to find Robin. Reprints from older DC stories, and even from other companies that DC eventually acquired, include Plastic Man solving a murder, two stories wherein Batman investigates murders foreshadowed by paintings, the magical Ibis the Invicible keeping the god of destruction from escaping, an experiment made to try to turn Eclipso good, and an adventure with The Spider. While the last story sees the Paul Kirk II version of Manhunter and Christine St. Clair investigating a terrorist organization in Istanbul. Overall this issue has a good collection of stories that showcase the strengths, and a bit of the weaknesses, of comics from the four decades. The story and writing for them are very imaginative and tells their story well, but also suffer from overuse of exposition. Dialogue can also go for way too long and has a tendency to fill in the artwork, thus keeping the reader from actually seeing what they're saying. As fun as the stories can be, the older they are the more obvious it is that logic wasn't always a key factor to how the stories continue and ended. And that's fine as even without the logic, their writing does keep you invested and entertained throughout. The artwork for all eight stories are pretty good and showcase the evolution of how comics were drawn from the 40s to the 70s. One thing that's consistent for the most part in the four decades is the attention to detail of the characters and locations. Although one thing that the newest stories have over the older ones is that more panels are used to showcase action rather than having things happen off screen and being exposited. But all in all Detective Comics Vol. 1 #441 is a great collection of comic book stories with not a single one being a chore to get through. Over all: 100%

Wonka

Timothée Chalamet takes over from Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp as Roald Dahl's iconic chocolatier in Wonka. This film sees Chalamet as a young Willy Wonka as he sets out to make his mark in the world with his unique way of making chocolate and candy. Along the way he deals with corrupt policemen, ruthless competition with other chocolate makers, and scamming laundromat owners while making his late mother proud, gains friends from other broken dreamers, and comes upon an annoyed Oompa-Loompa. While the rest of the cast is wonderful, including Hugh Grant as a Loompa, it's Chalamet who excels at playing the magical candy maker. He gives a good combination of Wilder's movement and mannerisms with Depp's oddness and energy while having his own takes on the character. Paul King as a director and cowriter with Simon Farnaby really capture the perfect aspects to what made the original book and the 1971 and 2005 movies so memorable. The whimsical and childlike nature is all there and manages to make the most absurd parts fit really well into this film's world. Especially helped by the production design, cinematography from Chung Chung-hoon, the breathless score by Joby Talbot, and Neil Hannon's songs that are perfectly choreographed by the casts' fun and quick dancing. If there was one movie to end 2023 with then there's no other perfect choice than the wonderful, whimsical, and wholesome Wonka. Over all: 100%

Wish

2023 is the 100th anniversary of Walt Disney Pictures and Wish is the movie that celebrates the studio's centennial. In their latest animated project, Ariana DeBose voices a young girl named Asha who lives in a kingdom whose king grants a wish from one of his subjects once a month with the caveat that all other desires are forgotten by those he hasn't fulfilled. When she is given the chance to be King Magnifico's apprentice Asha learns that he only grants desires that won't risk his rule, including her grandfather's long awaited wish to become a musician. Unable to fight back against Magnifico, Asha's wish towards a shooting star leads to the star to become alive and leads to the two and Asha's friends to rebel against Magnifico who starts to use dark magic when he feels threatened. As Disney is well known for adapting old fairy tale stories, its animation style is a pretty good, though not perfect, combination of traditional and computer generated animation. It gives it a very storybook feel that would often open the early Disney films like Snow White and Pinocchio. One flaw is that some of the movement by the characters at the start does feel a bit stiff, but does improve as it goes. But the designs, look, lighting, color, and backgrounds do look incredibly stunning thanks to cinematographers Rob Dressel and Adolph Lusinsky. The initial story is perfect for celebrating Disney's 100th anniversary, and Jennifer Lee and Allison Moore do a great job at showcasing the studio's legacy through many great references, but it feels very cliche. Magnifico's turn to villainy felt like it needed more time, certain aspects of Asha's journey are a bit bland, and often certain choices the characters make are done just to reference Disney's past. However, Lee and Lusinsky do manage to make the characters likable enough to at least not make them boring and keep them endearing. Normally, Disney animated films excel best with the music, and while Dave Metzger's score is good, sadly the songs from Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice aren't the strongest. The opening song where Asha welcomes new people to Rosas isn't too strong and Magnifico's villain song is just okay but not highly memorable. The best one is definitely Asha's "This Wish", which gets a reprise with the other cast members, and manages to be highly memorable but also feeling like it needed more. But if there's one thing that you can't take away from this movie are the strong performances from its cast. Alongside DeBose you have Chris Pine having a fun time as a villain, Victor Garber giving a lot of warmth as Asha's grandfather, and Alan Tudyk stealing the movie as Asha's goat. While Wish may not be the best film to celebrate its parent company's centennial, that shouldn't take away from what is a wonderful looking, but very flawed, movie. Over all: 84%
