Split

A psychological thriller directed and written by M. Night Shyamalan and starring James McAvoy as a man with over 20 different personalities due to dissociative identity disorder. The film is all about McAvoy's character kidnapping three teen girls and holding them captive for one of his personalities, as the three girls try to figure out a way to escape by taking advantage of some of the personalities. Split is a very original film that starts out as a pretty normal thriller that then turns more supernatural by the end when the last personality is revealed, which could have gone too far by what the beginning was like, but the very last shot of the film makes what happened more plausible and fitting with a previous film that Shyamalan had made before. It has a slow pace, at times too many closeups, and some of the dialogue can come off weird at times if it wasn't explained better through one of the girls' flashback and McAvoy's backstory. The performances by McAvoy and the actresses who play the teen girls Anya Taylor-Joy, Betty Buckley, and Haley Lu Richardson are all perfect, believable, and frightening and the scenes involving McAvoy's psychiatrist talking about his condition help foreshadow what happens at the end without being too obvious. Justice League/Power Rangers #1

The first issue of a six part crossover storyline between the Justice League and the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, which begins with a flash forward of Angel Grove in ruins, Zack blaming himself, and Superman telling him he shouldn't, to the Rangers looking for Alpha, Zedd using a fake one to enter the Command Center, Zack teleporting himself to Gotham and fighting Batman due to thinking he's a monster, the rest of the Rangers arriving to help Zack, the Flash confiscating their weapons, and Kimberly's Pterodactyl Zord flying off with the Batmobile in its mouth. Through all of that, the first issue is very descent, not as amazing as the first issue of the Turtles and Batman crossover, but pretty fun nonetheless. Taking place early in the show's second season, as noted by Zedd's appearance and Tommy being the Green Ranger, the comic is both serious and filled with fun nostalgia. Batman's introduction, especially as he notes that Zack's fighting style suggest he has a head injury due to his battle with Zedd, is awesome. The way this issue ends makes me wonder how their fighting will be resolved, how Batman and the League react to the Rangers being teens, and how this will all lead to Angel Grove in ashes and how it will be fixed. The Comic Cavalcade: Archives Volume 1

One of the longest comics I ever read and my first foray into the Golden Age of comic books, The Comic Cavalcade: Archives Volume 1 is a collection of the first three issues of the Comic Cavalcade series by DC Comics, with some as long as 96 pages long. Originally debuting in the 1940s, each of the first three issues told stories revolving around The Flash, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern as well as other lesser known superheroes, adventure stories, comedy skits, and written shorts. While it was fun to read these older stories, there are some problems they have that are obvious for today's readers. While it makes sense that there are numerous times when they make Hitler to look like an absolute fool due to World War 2, the over the top German accents they gave to some characters made it hard to read. The odd resolutions and over the top ways some stories played out showed how young comics were at the time and how they weren't always taken serious unlike today. Wonder Woman always being bound by her hands and having to be rescued, a pirate hero and his son donning their costumes just to get clothes for their family, lots of paragraphs for each frame, and a police detective being hired by Hollywood all because he was good at his job. For it's time it's very racial insensitive in that it portrays any Japanese, African American, and other minorities as over the top stereotypes. It still has some really great artwork made by the best that DC Comics had to offer for their times. Over all: 68%
