DC Universe: Legacies #1

DC Universe: Legacies #1 is the debut of a ten part limited series that DC worked on from May of 2010 to March of 2011. Meant as a tribute to the publisher's history, the ten issues each told two stories, the first halves focusing on retired cop Paul Lincoln retelling the history of the DC heroes from their emergence in the early 1940s to the modern day from his perspective, while the second being small snippets of heroes well known in those specific times. With the first issue, Lincoln is a kid trying to survive in the Great Depression-raddled Suicide Slums of Metropolis. The best way he can provide for his family is by collecting protection money for mobsters throughout the area. Things start to change when the Crimson Avenger, Sandman, and Atom take down the criminals and Paul decides to get honest work. The second half sees a photographer and reporter investigating recent events involving Doctor Fate, Zatara, and Spectre and wonder whether or not magic is real and if their heroics were just tricks. Len Wein, co-creator of Swamp Thing and Wolverine, wrote the entire series while multiple artists took part in different issues, even certain pages. The writing is very witty, evenly paced, and manages to capture a good combination of Golden and Modern Age. This issue's artists include Skott Collins, Andy and Joe Kubert, Brad Anderson, J.G. Jones, and Alex Sinclair. The art for the first half, mostly, has a more modern sensibility though the heroes have some Golden Age stylings to them. All the while, the second half is all modern, being done in a manner reminiscent of water color paintings that is quite breathtaking. Wanting to pay tribute to its long history, the comic book publisher that gave us Batman and Superman have certainly given us just that with the debut of DC Universe: Legacies #1. Over all: 100%
