Alex Toth's Zorro: The Complete Dell Comics Adventures, as the title suggests, is a collection of comics released by Hermes Press and based on the late 1950s Disney television show about Zorro published by Dell Comics in their
Four Colors anthology and the character's own self titled series written and drawn by Alex Toth. As usual with the character, the comics sees Don Diego de la Vega don the heroic guise of Zorro to take on those who would harm the people of his small town in 1820s California. Don Diego dons his all black get up, rides at night with the help of his trusted horse Tornado, uses his fencing skills and intellect to win the day, and gets help mainly from his mute manservant Bernardo. Stories include Zorro taking on the corrupt Captain Monastario, humiliating Sergeant Garcia, proving the innocence of people wrongly accused of a crime they didn't commit, and taking on bandits and thieves. For comic book stories published from 1957 to 1960, these are not only well done but are very mature compared to what many expect the Silver Age of comics often gives. The writing and artwork from Alex Toth proves why he's such a revered legend among comic book creatives. His writing is very mature, fun, and well told and while it does involve a lot of dialogue, it's not wooden and stays true to how television was like back then. While Toth's art is absolutely phenomenal and incredibly colorful, ironic since the show was in black and white. The characters all feel different from one another, the backgrounds are very detailed, and the sequential action scenes are well done. Because of this great combination of art and writing,
Alex Toth's Zorro: The Complete Dell Comics Adventures has one of the best collections of comics ever done, whether they'd be a few years old or even decades. Over all: 100%
